Role Model

Communicator Role Model

My communicator role model is Louise Lloyd.  Mrs. Lloyd is the director of the agency where I work.  She is a strong ethical communicator because she is professional, uses inclusive langauge, and works well with a diverse group of people.  Mrs. Lloyd exhibits professional behavior and shows respect for diverse cultural beliefs and traditions.

I would like to model myself after Mrs. Lloyd by learning to communicate with a variety of diverse people.  Sometimes, I do not understand that I may offend others by communicating with them based on my own beliefs.  Therefore, I want to learn to disclose what is relevant to me and the audience.  This will help me establish stronger relationships with parents.

  1. Hi Debra,

You bring up a good point about pushing our own beliefs when we communicate with others.

I remember working with a student a few years ago who was around the age where they aren't so sure about Santa. I found myself watching my words carefully, so that he didn't think i was patronizing him. This was just a simple little concept, but it points out 2 concepts: we need to be aware of our audience, but also the different 'isms in society. For example, I was working off the assumption that he celebrated Christmas let alone whether or not he beleived in Santa.

  2. Debra,
It is great to have an example of an effective communicator to model after, Mrs. Lloyd. In the professional environment it is vital to suppress your personal ideas/feelings especially if it interferes with effectively communicating.

    Hello Debra,

Thank you for sharing your example of an effective communicator. You bring up a good point that effective communication consists of ethical and inclusive communication that is targeted at working with diverse groups.
