Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the number one cause of infant deaths.  This term is used when infants die without any reason or cause.  Most deaths due to SIDS occur between 2 and 4 months of age, and incidence increases during cold weather.  There is a lot research for SIDS; however, there is no one factor that leads to SIDS.  Therefore, parents should monitor children closely in the first four months.

SIDS is high in South Africa.  This is attributed to poor nutrition and a lack of medical resources such as prenatal care.

  1. This such an important and devastating topic. I have known a few couples that have lost their child to this and it completely devastated them. I do not yet have children but I could not even begin to imagine the pain of losing your baby suddenly like this. Having a child and beginning the journey of watching them grow is such a blessing and to have this happen would have to be among the worst feeling one will ever feel. It is also so difficult because there isn't always a major cause or reasoning behind it and I am sure that furthers to pain and anguish for the parents. Very nice post!
